Saving Baby Teeth With Gentle Nerve Treatment
A pulpotomy gives your child the best chance of keeping a baby tooth that decay has already reached deep inside. At South Valley Pediatric Dentistry in Springville and Payson, our pediatric specialists have the training and experience to handle this procedure with precision and care.
Saving the tooth is almost always better than extracting it. A baby tooth that stays in place continues to hold space for the permanent tooth underneath, supports proper chewing, and helps with speech development. After the infected nerve tissue is removed, the tooth is sealed and protected with a pediatric crown so it can function normally until it falls out on its own.
We offer a full range of sedation options to keep your child comfortable during the procedure, from nitrous oxide for mild anxiety to oral sedation or IV sedation for younger or more anxious children.
- Removes only the infected portion of the nerve
- Preserves the baby tooth and its function
- Prevents the need for early extraction
- Typically completed in one visit with a crown

How a Pulpotomy Works
Diagnosis
We examine the tooth and take X-rays to determine whether the decay has reached the nerve and whether a pulpotomy is the right treatment.
Numbing and Comfort
The area is numbed with local anesthesia. Sedation options are available for younger or anxious children.
Nerve Treatment
The infected pulp tissue in the crown of the tooth is carefully removed. A medicated material is placed over the remaining healthy nerve.
Crown Placement
A pediatric crown is placed over the tooth to seal and protect it. The crown remains until the baby tooth falls out naturally.
Benefits of Pulpotomy for Your Child
Saves the Natural Tooth
A pulpotomy preserves the baby tooth so it can continue to hold space and support your child's development.
Relieves Pain
By removing the infected tissue, a pulpotomy eliminates the source of your child's toothache and prevents further infection.
Avoids Early Extraction
Keeping the tooth avoids the need for a space maintainer and supports normal eruption of the permanent tooth below.
