Deeper Relaxation for Children Who Need More Support
For children whose anxiety goes beyond what laughing gas can manage, oral sedation offers a stronger level of comfort. Our pediatric dentists use oral conscious sedation to help kids feel deeply calm and relaxed while they remain awake and breathing on their own.
Your child takes a liquid medication by mouth before treatment begins. Within 45 to 60 minutes, the medication takes effect and your child enters a drowsy, comfortable state. Most children remember little or nothing about the procedure afterward, which helps build positive feelings about future dental visits.
Our pediatric dentists are licensed to provide sedation and monitor your child throughout the entire visit.
Oral sedation works well for children with moderate anxiety, strong gag reflexes, or treatment plans that require about an hour of chair time. Full-mouth rehabilitation can often be completed under oral sedation in a single extended visit, reducing the total number of appointments your family needs.
- Child stays conscious but deeply relaxed throughout treatment
- Simple liquid medication taken by mouth before the visit
- Most children have little or no memory of the procedure
- Well-suited for moderate anxiety and longer appointments

What to Expect With Oral Sedation
Consultation and Fasting Instructions
Before the appointment, our team reviews your child's health history and provides specific fasting guidelines. Your child will need to avoid solid foods for at least six hours and clear liquids for at least two hours before the visit.
Medication and Onset
When you arrive, our team gives your child a flavored liquid sedative by mouth. We wait 45 to 60 minutes in a comfortable area while the medication takes full effect. Your child will become drowsy and relaxed.
Treatment With Continuous Monitoring
Once your child is comfortably sedated, the pediatric dentist begins the planned dental work. Our team monitors vital signs, oxygen levels, and breathing continuously throughout the entire procedure.
Recovery and Discharge
After treatment, your child rests in our office under observation while the sedation gradually wears off. We provide detailed post-visit care instructions and will not discharge your child until they are recovering well. Plan for a quiet afternoon at home.
Why Parents Choose Oral Sedation
No Needles Involved
The sedative is given as a flavored liquid, making the process much easier for children who are afraid of needles. This helps reduce stress before treatment even starts.
Bridges the Gap Between Mild and Deep Sedation
Oral sedation provides a level of comfort that is stronger than nitrous oxide but does not require an IV. It is often the right fit for children with moderate anxiety who do not need the deepest levels of sedation.
More Treatment in Fewer Visits
Because your child remains calm for an extended period, oral sedation often allows the dentist to complete more work in a single appointment. This means fewer total visits for your family.
